Recently I was listening to a podcast that I love. I listen to it religiously and I never miss an episode. It’s one of the very few that covers modern football that I bother with. Yes, I prefer football nostalgia podcasts. Who knew?
One of the presenters made a passionate speech about how top teams from the 1990s would not be able to beat mid-table sides of today. He claimed that the players today are better technically and physically. Although the game has moved on, those who peaked in the 1990s were still high quality and I disagree with the podcaster.
But it made me think.
So I’ve put together a side from the 90s, that I think would have been brilliant today. There are some that haven’t made it because although they were great, I don’t know if they would be as adaptable. The perfect example is Peter Schmeichel. If he had one weakness, it was when he had the ball at his feet. In modern football, it would be a necessary skill when playing at the highest level.
So during this week, I’m going to reveal who made it. Starting today with the defence and the goalkeeper. I’ll also add some honourable mentions too. This is only available for paid subscribers, so if you wish to follow this series, click on the link to join.
The usual Wednesday freebie will be coming too, but on a different subject. The midfielders and forwards will be announced later this week in two more articles. So that will be a total of four articles this week.
