What happened when Newport County took on Europe?
For many people outside of Britain, it can be very confusing how the different sports are run. At the Olympics we have Great Britain coming together in their quest for medals, while at football it’s not the case at all.
People ask why the national teams are separated. And to add further confusion, there are Welsh clubs playing in the English leagues. Cardiff City and Swansea City have also enjoyed time in the Premier League, branded as the EPL on foreign shores.
Incredibly until 1995 these clubs were invited to take part in the Welsh Cup along with teams like Hereford United and Shrewsbury Town. Those two sides are from England but were considered close enough to the border to be involved. All of them participated in the English cups too.
Are you following ok? It’s a little complicated to understand. Try explaining it to a German or French football fan. It’s not easy. I think I did better when I tried to help them understand cricket.
