I hope everyone is having a good Easter. It just so happens that Easter Monday falls on 1st April this year. That gives us the opportunity to travel back to 1995 and look at how one promoted side made another team look rather foolish in front of their own fans.
The Premier League title race was down to Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United, with Rovers six points in front. Newcastle were in third but just one place below them was Nottingham Forest. The team from the City Ground had bounced back after their double blow of relegation and the retirement of Brian Clough in 1993.
Now managed by ex-player Frank Clark, Forest were promoted after only one season away and were making waves on their return to the top flight. They had already beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford, ending a long unbeaten home record. With Stan Collymore and Brian Roy linking up in attack, Clark had created an exciting side that were looking to qualify for Europe. But on April Fools’ Day 1995, they had a tough game at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday.
