Forgotten classics
Two thrilling matches from Septembers gone-by
So I was going to write about the 1998 play-off final between Charlton Athletic and Sunderland. It was a classic game that finished 4-4, with a penalty shootout needed to decide who would be promoted to the Premier League.
After Michael Gray’s penalty was saved by Sasa Ilic, Charlton were promoted. Sunderland had to wait another year before they went up.
So why am I not covering this game today?
I thought to myself that it’s already been written about a lot. Like the Liverpool versus Newcastle games of the mid 90s, there’s probably nothing new for me to cover.
But it got me thinking.
There are a lot of games that were thrilling and dramatic that have been forgotten about. Perhaps they weren’t live on TV or maybe too long ago for some of you. So I decided to go back and look at some forgotten classics.
One game that won’t make the list but fits the criteria is the QPR 5 Newcastle 5 game from 1984. It’s because I did a full piece on it earlier this year.

So let’s carry on with these hidden gems; matches that might have disappeared from your memory or maybe you didn’t catch them first time round.
This is going to be an occasional series; two games are covered today and both are true classics from the month of September.
We’re off to Birmingham first.
