Golden Balls
The Ballon d’Or winners of the 1990s

I hope you all had a great weekend. It’s time for your fix of football fuzziness as we go back in time together. We’re toasting some great names today too.

The European Player of the Year award or the Ballon d’Or, as is it better known has been one of the most prestigious individual prizes since it began back in 1956.

A creation of France Football magazine, it grew in reputation very quickly and many incredible players have been honoured. The first ever winner was an Englishman; Stanley Matthews. Then in the 1990s, something changed. For the first time, non-European players were allowed into the reckoning.
