Holders Hatters make a statement
One foot in the final
Welcome to Retro Football Network! It’s been a while since I’ve written to you, so let’s dive straight back into some classic nostalgia.
Today we’re heading to 12 February 1989 and Upton Park, where West Ham United hosted Luton Town in the first leg of the Littlewoods Cup semi‑final.
West Ham were in real trouble in the league, sitting bottom of the First Division. Luton, the holders after their sensational 3–2 win over Arsenal the previous season, were 15th and only three points above the drop zone. Both sides needed a lift.
Luton struck first. Mick Harford rose to meet a Danny Wilson cross and powered a header home. In the second half, things got even better for the visitors. Roy Wegerle picked up the ball, fancied his chances, and ran straight at the West Ham defence. Once he wriggled free, he went for goal. His shot flew in at the near post — surprising Brian Moore on commentary, who seemed unsure it had actually crossed the line. As Wegerle celebrated, West Ham’s defenders put their hands on their heads. They knew they were in deep trouble.
To get back into the tie, West Ham needed calm heads. Instead, Julian Dicks pulled Wegerle back unnecessarily and conceded a clear penalty. Danny Wilson, a hero of the 1988 final, stepped up and dispatched it. Wembley was suddenly within touching distance for Luton.
To put the situation into perspective, ITV had so little faith in a West Ham comeback that the second leg at Kenilworth Road wasn’t shown live. It was relegated to highlights on Midweek Sports Special. And the broadcasters were right — Luton won 2–0 and cruised into the final to defend their trophy.
Sadly for the Hatters, they ran into League Cup specialists Nottingham Forest. Brian Clough’s side won 3–1, despite Luton taking the lead. Luton did at least stay up, finishing the season in 16th place.
West Ham weren’t so lucky. They were relegated with 38 points.
