Yes, because we’re going took go back and see when a Scotsman was a vital part of a Champions League winning side back in the 1990s.
After lifting the Bundesliga title in 1996, Borussia Dortmund would fly the flag for Germany in the Champions League. This was heading into the final season when only the champions qualified for the competition. And the Germans also took advantage of the new Bosman ruling by signing an out of contract player from Motherwell.
After his agent made contact with both PSV Eindhoven and Dortmund, Paul Lambert went on trial with both clubs. The latter offered him a deal and he signed for Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 1996. Competition would be fierce though; Paulo Sousa had also joined from Juventus.
