Welcome everyone to Friday’s instalment of the Retro Football Network. Today I’m taking you back to a time that I will never forget. It’s because it all happened around my 13th birthday.
Becoming a teen is a big deal, especially as it’s hyped up by adults. They see you as going from innocent childhood to becoming a moody adolescent who “really should know better”.
It’s a confusing time for boys and girls of this age, as we get pressure about our future while wondering what the hell is happening to us physically and mentally.
So in the summer of 1989, with the “big day” approaching, I spent my summer holidays playing football, riding my bike or just hanging round the streets. I also watched The Ashes, it was still on the BBC back then. Australia hammered England 4-0. It was not pretty.
On rainy days, I naturally fired up the ZX Spectrum and played my favourite games. Apart from the cricket result, looking back on that summer, it seems like it was brilliant!
In the August, a businessman became an overnight sensation. He wasn’t someone we already knew like Richard Branson. But he was all over the news in the build-up to the new football season beginning on Saturday 19th August.
His name?
Michael Knighton.
