It’s the Easter weekend but the Retro Football Network does not rest. Here is your final piece for the month of March.
We have heard so many times over the last number of years about the Golden Generations from different countries. England in the early to mid-2000s spring to mind as does Belgium in the latter part of the 2010s.
Another nation who also had an excellent crop of players that came through at a similar time to England was Portugal. After doing so well in 2000, everything seemed set to lead them to their destiny; winning Euro 2004 on their home soil. It wasn’t to be and certain players started to make way for a new group.
One of the leaders of this original set of Portuguese stars was 32 when Greece beat them in the final. It was his last hurrah. He retired from international duty after the disappointing climax to the tournament. The man known as “The Maestro” could concentrate on the rest of his career at club level now.
